Frequently Asked
Questions

What types of mental health conditions do you treat?

We specialize in the care of adults with complex psychiatric needs including Alzheimer's and other types of dementia, depression, anxiety, some forms of PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, personality disorders, autism, neurodivergence, and intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). We also support caregivers with education, stress management, and behavioral strategies.

Why choose a psychiatric nurse practitioner instead of a psychiatrist?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice providers who are fully licensed to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications (including controlled substances), and provide supportive therapy, just like a psychiatrist, but often at a more affordable cost. The nurse practitioner model of care is rooted in holistic, person-centered treatment that emphasizes collaboration, continuity, and accessibility.

When might a psychiatrist be more appropriate?

In rare cases, such as treatment-resistant psychosis requiring inpatient admission, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or complex forensic/legal evaluations, a referral to a psychiatrist may be more appropriate. If such needs arise, we are happy to help coordinate care with the appropriate specialists.

Do you work with dementia-related behaviors like aggression or paranoia?

Yes. We provide compassionate psychiatric care for individuals with dementia experiencing behavioral symptoms such as agitation, aggression, confusion, paranoia, or delusions. Our goal is to reduce crisis episodes, improve quality of life, and support caregivers.

Do you offer psychiatric care after hospital or nursing home discharge?

Yes. We offer post-discharge transitional psychiatric services including psychiatric evaluations, medication reconciliation, short-term counseling, family/caregiver guidance, and referrals to case management or outpatient services. We help patients and families adjust to life at home and reduce the risk of readmission.

Do you treat individuals with autism, neurodivergence, or intellectual disabilities?

Absolutely. We offer tailored psychiatric are for adults with IDD, autism, or sensory/communication differences, adapting our approach to meet each individual's unique needs and working closely with caregivers.

Do you work with caregivers and family members?

Yes. We actively involve caregivers and loved ones in care planning, especially when treating individuals with dementia, cognitive impairment, or developmental disabilities. We also offer coaching, education, and emotional support to reduce burnout and strengthen the care network.

Do you offer therapy or just medication management?

We specialize in psychiatric assessment and medication management. While we don't offer full psychotherapy services, we do provide brief therapy sessions and collaborate with outside therapists or refer you to trusted providers when appropriate.

Can I choose how often I have appointments?

Yes. Appointment frequency is based on your individual needs, preferences, and clinical recommendations. We offer flexible scheduling to support your personalized care plan.

Where are services provided?

We offer services in several settings including in-office, telehealth (video), in-home, assisted living homes, independent living homes, group homes, host homes (for eligible clients), and on-site in long-term care facilities (for discharge purposes only).

Who qualifies for in-home psychiatric visits?

In-home services are offered to individuals with mobility challenges, individuals with cognitive, behavioral, or psychiatric symptoms that make office visits unsafe or impractical, or those with advanced dementia or IDD with care refusal or agitation during travel. Eligibility is determined during your initial consultation or referral process.

How long are appointments?

Initial evaluations are 60-90 minutes, and follow-up visits are 30-45 minutes (depending on your care plan). We value unhurried, thoughtful visits to support your long-term stability.

Do you treat children or adolescents?

No. Our practice exclusively serves adults age 18 and older.

How do I get started?

We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to answer your questions, understand your needs, and determine whether we're a good fit.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not bill insurance directly. Instead, we offer transparent direct-pay pricing, sliding-scale options for those who qualify, and superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. This model allows us to offer longer, more personalized care without insurance restrictions.

How does payment work?

Payment is due prior to, or at the time of, service. We accept major credit cards and other common forms of payment. Superbills are available upon request for possible insurance reimbursement.

Do you prescribe controlled substances?

Yes - when clinically appropriate and in accordance with all state and federal regulations. All prescribing decisions are based on individual needs, safety, and best practices.

Are services available in Spanish?

Yes. Services are offered in both English and Spanish.

How do I access my medical records?

Please contact our office to request your records. We're happy to help - but we do ask for a reasonable processing time to complete your request.
